The dead bodies of a wealthy Indian-origin couple and their teenage daughter were discovered in their opulent mansion, situated in one of the most upscale enclaves in Massachusetts, United States.

Rakesh Kamal, aged 57, his 54-year-old wife Teena, and their 18-year-old daughter Ariana were discovered deceased within their residence on the evening of Thursday, December 28, according to Norfolk District Attorney (DA) Michael Morrissey.

Authorities indicated that the initial investigation suggested a “fatal incident of domestic violence” with no external involvement.

The Kamal family, of Indian descent, founded a tech company in the United States. Rakesh Kamal was the head of an education systems company named EduNova, which eventually ceased operations.

Indian Couple Devastated by Financial Crisis

Rakesh Kamal, an alumnus of Boston University, Stanford University, and MIT Sloan School of Management, built a career in education consulting. In 2016, he and his wife launched an Ed-tech company called EduNova.

EduNova introduced a ‘student success system’ aimed at enhancing academic performance in middle school, high school, and college, as reported by The Boston Globe newspaper. Initially successful, the company’s prosperity enabled the Kamals to acquire a 19,000-square-foot estate with 11 bedrooms for $4 million in 2019, according to state records.

However, records indicate that the company dissolved in December 2021, leading the couple into a financial crisis. A year ago, their expansive mansion faced foreclosure and was eventually sold to Massachusetts-based Wilsondale Associates LLC for $3 million. At the time of sale, the estate’s value was estimated at $5.45 million.

Teena Kamal, a graduate of Delhi University in India and Harvard University, also initiated bankruptcy proceedings in September 2022, underscoring the evident financial strain experienced by the couple.

What led the police to discover the deceased Indian Couple on 28th Dec 2023?

On Thursday evening (Dec 28), at 7:24 pm local time, the police received a call from a relative of the Kamal family, who, having received no updates from them for days, had come to visit.

Authorities mentioned that the Kamal family’s three members were the sole occupants of the mansion at that time. The affluent neighborhood, described as “a nice neighborhood, a safe community,” was emphasized.

Upon entering the house, the police discovered the lifeless bodies of Rakesh, Teena, and Ariana. The Norfolk District Attorney stated that the motive behind this “terrible tragedy” would only be unveiled through a thorough investigation. He further explained that the determination of whether it was a suicide or murder would depend on the medical examiner’s ruling. A firearm was reportedly found near Rakesh Kamal’s body, and Morrissey remarked, “All I can tell you is there was a gun on the premises, and it was apparent to all those that went in that all three members of the family were dead.”
